Benzodiazepines, commonly referred to as “benzos,” are a class of psychoactive substances that act on the central nervous system. They have been widely used in medical settings for indications such as anxiety disorders, insomnia, seizure management, muscle relaxation, and procedural sedation. Well-known pharmaceutical examples include diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, and clonazepam.

Benzodiazepines exert their effects by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that reduces neuronal excitability in the brain. Modulation of the GABA-A receptor is associated with calming, sedative, anxiolytic, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects.
