Description
Rilmazafone is a benzodiazepine derivative that functions as a prodrug, meaning it is metabolized in the body into active benzodiazepine compounds. It has been used clinically in some countries as a hypnotic agent, primarily for the short-term management of sleep disorders. Unlike many benzodiazepines, rilmazafone itself has limited pharmacological activity until it undergoes metabolic conversion.
After metabolism, the active compounds interact with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central nervous system. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter involved in regulating neural excitability, and modulation of this system is commonly associated with sedative and hypnotic effects.
